Puglia Road Trip

The first time I arrived in Otranto, Puglia I was blown away by its magical white washed houses. I thought, I surely must be in heaven with the milky-turquoise sea as its back drop and the smell of fried fish in the air. We were staying at a campsite nearby Torre dell' Orso, where the sea is known as the Italian Caribbean, it's that beautiful !! We headed on down to the tip of the peninsula to Santa Maria di Leuca where you can lie like a mermaid on the large slabs of stone and let the navy blue sea wash over your body. It has a lovely promenade where artisans like myself display all kinds of handcrafts and is great for night time shopping and people watching-the ultimate Italian fashion show. Driving west along the cliffs, Gallipoli (Italian for beautiful city) presents with a unique history, an impressive castle and sand-coloured buildings. It's great to wander the streets, relive the past and then jump in the harbour for a cooling dip, before the buzz of the night-time summer crowd heats up !! Take your pick of the beaus! Head up to Porto Cesareo for the best of Salento's ( this region) west side beaches; where a sand bank separates waves from lake like water. Finish off in Lecce for more history, a beauty of a cathedral and the celebration of lights during festival times! For the very adventurous head north to Albero Bello with its fairy like houses -you be like "where am I ?' And over to Ostuni for a characteristic Italian village and a grilled octopus dinner!
